Google Chrome, the world’s largest browser, is introducing a range of new features aimed at enhancing user productivity. These features include Split View, PDF annotations, and a “Save to Google Drive” option, all designed to further integrate Chrome with Google’s other online services.

While these updates are not directly related to AI, Google has already integrated its Gemini AI assistant into Chrome in response to growing competition from AI providers like OpenAI and Perplexity. The so-called browser wars have prompted Google to be more proactive in developing and releasing consumer-facing features.

One of the new features, Split View, makes multitasking easier by allowing users to view two webpages side by side in the same tab. This feature is particularly useful for tasks like working across multiple pages or watching a video while taking notes. To use Split View, simply drag a tab to the left or right edge of the browser window or right-click a link and select “Open Link in Split View.”

Another useful addition is the PDF annotations feature, which enables users to add notes to a PDF or highlight text directly from the browser. This eliminates the need to download the PDF and open it in a separate application for editing. Tasks like digitally signing a document, filling out a form, or making notes within a file are now much simpler with this feature.

The new “Save to Google Drive” option allows users to save PDFs directly to their Google Drive account, rather than downloading them to their computer where they may get lost. Saved files will appear in a designated “Saved from Chrome” folder in Google Drive, making them easy to locate and access.

These updates follow the recent expansion of Gemini and other AI features to Chromebook users. Additionally, Chrome is set to adopt support for vertical tabs in the near future, a feature that was first introduced by competitors like The Browser Company’s Arc and Dia AI browser. By incorporating these features and enhancements, Google aims to provide Chrome users with a compelling reason to stick with their preferred browser.

Overall, these new features and updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to improving user experience and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving browser market. Users can expect even more innovations and improvements from Chrome as it continues to evolve and adapt to the changing digital landscape.
