Max Verstappen is hopeful that Honda can overcome its early struggles with Aston Martin as the team faces challenges in the 2026 F1 pre-season. With the season opener in Melbourne fast approaching, Aston Martin is grappling with reliability and performance issues during testing in Bahrain.

The team’s pre-season got off to a rocky start at the Barcelona shakedown last month. The AMR26 faced delays, with Lance Stroll managing only four laps before a breakdown and Fernando Alonso completing just 61 laps on the final day. This lack of track time has put Aston Martin on the back foot heading into the final day of testing on February 20.

Verstappen, who achieved all his titles with Honda power, expressed his hope for a quick recovery from the Japanese manufacturer. While he is unsure of the technical details, he emphasized his support for Honda’s success in Formula 1.

Despite Honda now supplying a rival team, Verstappen maintains a positive outlook and shows no bitterness. However, Aston Martin’s struggles persist, with Alonso facing mechanical delays and Stroll triggering a red flag due to active aero concerns.

The team’s pace has been lackluster compared to rivals, and F1 insider Lawrence Barretto attributes this to a delayed wind tunnel program and Honda’s return after re-allocating resources. Building a new power unit under fresh regulations presents its challenges, but the expectations were high given Honda’s past success with Red Bull.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen is focused on Red Bull’s new partnership with Ford for powertrains in the 2026 season. Despite solid reliability in testing, he acknowledges that there is still work to be done. Verstappen highlighted cooling issues that affected teammate Isack Hadjar but remained optimistic about the team’s performance overall.

As Aston Martin and Honda work through their challenges, the F1 community eagerly anticipates how these teams will fare in the upcoming season. With Verstappen leading the charge for Red Bull and Aston Martin looking to overcome their setbacks, the stage is set for an exciting and competitive 2026 F1 season.
