Colorado’s Bustang bus service has seen a significant increase in ridership over the years, especially along Interstates 25 and 70. State records indicate that the number of people riding Bustang buses has increased eightfold since the service began a decade ago and tripled since 2019.

The fares for Bustang buses vary based on distance, with prices ranging from $10 to downtown Fort Collins, $12 to Colorado Springs, $28 to Glenwood Springs, and $43 to Grand Junction from Denver Union Station. However, there are concerns about the sustainability of the service after 2027, as the current funding from state lawmakers is running out.

Despite the financial challenges, CDOT officials are determined to keep the Bustang buses running as they have become a popular and reliable alternative to driving. Paul DesRocher, CDOT’s director of transit and rail, emphasized the importance of expanding the service to make transit more convenient for people.

The buses along the primary routes run frequently, with some longer routes running once or twice a day. Riders can enjoy amenities such as Wi-Fi, bathrooms, bike racks, charging stations, and comfortable seating. The buses are also equipped with wheelchair lifts and can accommodate up to 50 passengers.

Statewide ridership for Bustang buses has been on the rise, reaching 385,248 in 2025, a 24% increase from the previous year. Efforts are being made to secure additional funding through tolled express lanes, rental car fees, and support from state lawmakers to ensure the sustainability of the service.

CDOT officials are working on reallocating funds to maintain existing routes until 2027 while exploring long-term financial solutions. The future of Bustang buses remains uncertain, but efforts are underway to keep the service operational and potentially expand it in the future.
