Canada secured their spot in the gold medal game at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Finland. The game was decided in the dying seconds of regulation when Nathan MacKinnon scored the game-winning goal on a power play. However, the presence of Canadian referees Eric Furlatt and Dan O’Rourke in the game drew criticism from fans who felt their calls favored the Canadian team.

The match saw Finland take an early lead with Mikko Rantanen scoring on a power play in the first period. Erik Haula extended Finland’s lead with a shorthanded goal in the second period. Canada fought back with goals from Sam Reinhart and Shea Theodore to level the score. MacKinnon’s late winner sealed the comeback victory for Canada, despite a review for offside that stood in Canada’s favor.

Fans took to social media to express their frustration with the referees, with some accusing them of bias towards the Canadian team. Several fans questioned the integrity of the result and suggested that the outcome of the game felt predetermined. Despite the controversy, Canada will face the winner of the USA vs. Slovakia semifinal in the gold medal match.

In addition to the team’s success, Connor McDavid made Olympic history with his exceptional performance. McDavid set a new NHL-era Olympic record for most points in a single campaign with 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists). He surpassed the previous record of 11 points held by Teemu Selänne and Saku Koivu from Turin 2006. McDavid’s leadership on the ice was crucial, especially with Sidney Crosby sidelined due to injury.

McDavid’s record-breaking assists and overall performance have been instrumental in Canada’s journey to the gold medal game. His nine assists prior to the semifinal were already an Olympic record on their own. With McDavid leading the way, Canada will look to secure Olympic glory in the final showdown.
