Judge Denies Tesla’s Request to Overturn $243 Million Verdict in Fatal Autopilot Crash Case

A judge has recently made a decision to deny Tesla’s request to overturn a $243 million jury verdict that found the automaker partially responsible for a fatal crash involving its Autopilot driver assistance system. This ruling comes after Hon. Judge Beth Bloom carefully considered Tesla’s arguments and found them to be lacking in persuasiveness to alter the earlier decisions made.

The case dates back to a tragic incident in 2019, where a fatal crash in Florida resulted in the death of Naibel Benavides and critically injured Dillon Angulo. The jury, in their verdict, assigned two-thirds of the blame to the driver and one-third to Tesla. Additionally, punitive damages were only assessed against Tesla in this case.

In response to the verdict, Tesla’s lawyers argued that the primary blame should be placed on the driver, who played a role in causing the crash. However, Judge Bloom’s decision stands firm in upholding the jury’s findings and denying Tesla’s request for relief.
