“The Sopranos” Star Michael Imperioli Talks About Characters Supporting Trump

In a recent interview with The Independent, Michael Imperioli, best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti in the hit HBO series “The Sopranos,” shared his thoughts on how the characters from the show would align politically in today’s climate. According to Imperioli, if the show were made today, the characters, who are mostly immigrants, would likely be supporters of Donald Trump.

Imperioli emphasized that “The Sopranos” is a reflection of the American dream, particularly through the eyes of immigrants. He pointed out that many Italian immigrants, like the characters in the show, were undocumented when they first arrived in the United States. He believes that this shared immigrant experience would lead some of the characters to support Trump, despite his controversial stance on immigration.

During its six-season run from 1999 to 2007, “The Sopranos” garnered critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. The show, created by David Chase, won a total of 21 Emmy Awards, with James Gandolfini earning three best actor wins for his portrayal of Tony Soprano. Imperioli himself received four Emmy nominations and won once for best supporting actor in a drama.

In a separate interview with The New York Times in 2019, David Chase shared his thoughts on how Tony Soprano, played by Gandolfini, would perceive Trump. Chase suggested that Tony would see Trump as insincere and untrustworthy, viewing him as “penny-ante” in terms of his dishonesty and public image.

As discussions around immigration, politics, and cultural identity continue to evolve, it’s intriguing to imagine how the characters from “The Sopranos” would navigate these complex issues in today’s world. Despite their criminal activities, the characters are deeply human and multifaceted, making them compelling subjects for exploration in a modern-day context.
