Former South Africa cricketer Dale Steyn took to social media to express his delight after India’s 76-run defeat to the Proteas in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The cricketer-turned-commentator was thrilled with the upset that saw the defending champions succumb to the South African team.

India, who had previously beaten South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final and in a series win in December 2025, were unable to maintain their winning streak. Steyn, who had returned home for shoulder surgery after covering group-stage matches, simply posted “Boom” on social media in response to the Proteas’ victory.

In the match, the Proteas posted a total of 187/7 after winning the toss. David Miller and Dewald Brevis played crucial roles in stabilizing the innings with a 97-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Miller’s quickfire 63 off 35 balls, along with contributions from Brevis and Tristan Stubbs, set the stage for their victory. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler for India, finishing with figures of 3/15.

India’s response fell short as they were bundled out for 111 in 18.5 overs. Shivam Dube top-scored with 42 off 37 balls, but it was not enough to secure a win. Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj led the bowling attack for South Africa, taking four and three wickets, respectively.

With this win, the Aiden Markram-led side continued their unbeaten streak in the tournament, having previously defeated Canada, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and the UAE. Their next match will be against the West Indies at the same venue.

On the other hand, India finds themselves in a precarious position with a net run rate of -3.800 following their loss to South Africa. To qualify for the semifinals, they will need to beat Zimbabwe and the West Indies by significant margins. Their next challenge will be against Zimbabwe in Chennai on Tuesday.

Overall, the T20 World Cup 2026 has been full of surprises and intense competition, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. As the tournament progresses, it will be interesting to see which teams will rise to the occasion and make their mark on the global stage.
