As educators in Christchurch face increasing challenges with their students’ needs, a group of retirees known as the “Grandees” is stepping in to support them in the classroom.

Founder of the Grandees, Wendy Nuthall, acknowledged the tough job teachers have, especially with the growing number of children facing learning and behavioral difficulties.

A recent report by the Aotearoa Educators’ Collective revealed that about 25% of New Zealand children are impacted by learning difficulties, with many not receiving the necessary support due to funding issues and bureaucratic obstacles.

The report’s author, Dr. Sarah Aiono, highlighted the strain teachers are under, as more students require various forms of assistance than ever before.

This is where the Grandees come in. The program, which currently consists of 38 volunteers, works with children at St Albans School, Papanui Primary, and Shirley Primary.

Nuthall explained that the Grandees aim to support teachers in practical ways, starting with helping children improve their reading skills but also assisting with other tasks as requested by the teachers.

The initiative is not limited to children with learning difficulties; the Grandees also work with students who may not receive individual attention due to time constraints.

Volunteers typically spend an hour per week in schools, working with up to four children, although the time is flexible based on the child’s needs.

Building strong relationships is a key aspect of the program, with volunteers working with the same children throughout the year.

Teachers have noted the positive impact of the extra support provided by the Grandees. Josie Simpson, a lead teacher at St Albans School, emphasized the value of one-on-one time with an adult, especially for English language learners.

The Grandees’ initiative originated from an outreach program at St Matthew’s Church in 2010, which initially focused on providing reading support to junior school children. The strong partnership with St Albans School led to the establishment of the Grandees program.

With the demand for support increasing, Nuthall expressed the group’s eagerness to welcome new volunteers, particularly men to serve as male role models for children in need.
