Head of research and development, known by his call sign “Shark,” leads the Killhouse Drone School in Kyiv, Ukraine. Standing in the middle of a room filled with electrical equipment, screens, wires, and a desk, Shark is focused on doing repairs on drones. The Killhouse Academy, run by the 3rd Assault Brigade, is Ukraine’s premier drone-pilot school, aiming to train individuals in the art of drone warfare.

In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, drones have become the primary weapons of choice. Russia utilizes long-range kamikaze aircraft to attack Ukraine, while Ukraine employs specialized interceptors to defend against these attacks. The battlefield has evolved into a drone-centric combat zone, with ground-based robots also playing a crucial role in delivering supplies, launching attacks, and evacuating the wounded.

Over the past four years since Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has established an entire industry dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and operating various types of drones. This industry has become a vital part of Ukraine’s defense strategy, with the hope of eventually selling their expertise and technology to Western countries once the conflict is resolved.

One example of Ukraine’s drone innovation is Ratel Robotics, founded by Taras Ostapchuk. Previously a civilian running a company that produced streetlights, Ostapchuk transitioned to the military as an aerial drone pilot. After sustaining an injury that ended his military career, he started Ratel Robotics, a company that now employs over 300 people and specializes in manufacturing ground drones for a variety of military purposes.

Ratel Robotics’ drones, such as the Ratel M and Ratel X, are designed for tasks like landmine placement and clearance, supply and ammunition delivery, and troop evacuation. These electric drones are virtually silent and capable of carrying heavy loads over long distances. Their versatility and durability make them essential assets on the front line, where traditional vehicles are vulnerable to drone attacks.

During a field test outside Kyiv, Ratel Robotics’ drones showcased their agility and functionality. The Ratel M and Ratel X proved to be capable of navigating rough terrain and carrying significant payloads with ease. These drones can operate autonomously, allowing operators to control them remotely from a safe distance.

With over 100 of these drones currently deployed on the front line, Ratel Robotics has demonstrated the effectiveness and reliability of their technology. These drones have been used for various missions, including covert operations and targeted attacks on enemy positions. Despite their destructive capabilities, Ratel Robotics’ drones are cost-effective, making them a valuable asset for Ukraine’s military strategy.

As Ukraine continues to innovate in the field of drone technology, companies like Ratel Robotics are at the forefront of this revolution. “The pace of development has been incredible. But we have to keep innovating, keep ahead of the Russians. They have vast numbers, but we have the technology.” With that, he leads me to a test rig for the Bullet drone. It’s a large net-covered area where the drone can be put through its paces safely. Kushnir demonstrates its agility, speed and precision, all of which are vital in a drone designed to take down Shaheds.

As we watch the drone zip around the enclosure, I can’t help but think about Ostapchuk’s words about China. While Ukrainian firms like General Cherry are striving to develop their own technology and reduce reliance on foreign components, there is no doubt that the global supply chain is intertwined. The conflict in Ukraine is a stark reminder that in times of war, innovation is not just about creating cutting-edge technology, but also about ensuring the security and independence of that technology.

Back in Kyiv, as I watch another wave of Shaheds being intercepted by Ukrainian defences, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe at the ingenuity and determination of the people I’ve met. In the face of constant threat and danger, they continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in drone technology, all in the name of defending their homeland. And as the war in Ukraine rages on, it is clear that the future of warfare is not just on the ground or in the air, but in the hands of those who innovate and adapt to meet the challenges of a changing battlefield.

The growth of General Cherry from a small operation with just three tables producing 20 FPVs per month to a massive operation with over 80,000 FPVs being produced is truly remarkable. The company now employs hundreds of individuals across Ukraine, many of whom had no prior knowledge of drones before the war. The demand for drones in modern warfare has skyrocketed, leading to the expansion of General Cherry and the establishment of drone pilot schools like the 3rd Assault Brigade’s “Killhouse Academy”.

At Killhouse Academy, students undergo rigorous training to become skilled drone pilots, ground operators, or engineers in just a matter of weeks. The courses offered range from basic flight training in classrooms to advanced simulations in realistic bunkers and assault courses. The speed and agility of these high-performance drones is astonishing, with experienced pilots able to maneuver through obstacles at incredible speeds.

The head of the research and development lab at Killhouse Academy, known as Shark, emphasizes the importance of reflexes and memory in drone warfare. Pilots need to be able to quickly identify enemy positions, navigate through jammed signals, and effectively target enemy tanks and soldiers. The technology in drone warfare is constantly evolving, with new innovations such as fibre-optic cables to prevent jamming and mothership drones that transport smaller drones near the front line.

One interesting innovation discovered at Killhouse Academy is the use of cheap commercial video broadcast screens as drone detectors. By carrying these screens, soldiers can detect the presence of enemy drones and take appropriate action. Trusta, a former diplomacy graduate turned drone engineer, exemplifies the shift in focus towards drone warfare in Ukraine. She has completed numerous courses at Killhouse Academy and is preparing to join the army and head to the front lines.

Ukraine’s approach to drone warfare is unique, with different army units competing for funding and resources like commercial companies. The flexibility and innovation in procurement and equipment usage have allowed for the rapid growth of drone technology in Ukrainian warfare. If launching a Shahed at Kyiv costs Russia $50,000, then it needs to cost Ukraine far less to shoot it out of the sky with an interceptor drone. Otherwise, there is an incentive for Russia to continue their attacks without much hindrance. However, leveraging technology to make attacks ineffective or unsustainable can provide Ukraine with a period of respite in the face of overwhelming numbers.

To address the need for essential military equipment, the Ukrainian government established an innovative organization called Brave1. This program serves as a platform to collect data from the front lines, analyze the performance of existing equipment, identify gaps, and provide guidance to companies involved in defense manufacturing. By offering intelligence, guidance, and grants, Brave1 aims to ensure that the military has access to the necessary resources to defend against Russian attacks.

One unique aspect of Brave1 is the operation of an online marketplace where a variety of equipment, including machine guns, drones, electronic jammers, and body armor, are reviewed and made available for purchase. Through Ukraine’s “situation awareness” software called Delta, potential customers can engage in discussions about the utility and capabilities of Brave1 equipment, facilitating informed decision-making.

Furthermore, Brave1 has introduced a gamified approach to warfare, where army units earn “e-points” for verified destruction of Russian equipment or soldiers. These points can be exchanged for new equipment, incentivizing effective military actions and resource utilization. Andrii Hrytseniuk, the head of Brave1, emphasizes the importance of diversifying products and empowering army units to determine their specific equipment needs. By leveraging AI and analyzing drone attack footage, Brave1 continuously seeks to enhance the effectiveness of military operations, adapting to the fast-paced innovation cycle in modern warfare.

As Ukraine navigates an industry it never intended to create, there are indications that the country may emerge as a global leader in modern warfare technologies. Western nations are closely monitoring developments in Ukraine’s defense sector, recognizing the transformative nature of future conflicts. Ukrainian companies are engaging with foreign partners, showcasing their capabilities, and potentially shaping the future of warfare.
