Anthropic’s Chatbot Claude Rises to Number Two in Apple’s US App Store Following Pentagon Negotiations

Anthropic’s chatbot Claude has experienced a surge in popularity, likely fueled by the recent attention surrounding the company’s negotiations with the Pentagon. According to a report by CNBC, Claude is currently ranked as the second most popular free app in Apple’s US App Store, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT claiming the top spot and Google Gemini following closely behind.

Data from SensorTower reveals that Claude has seen a significant rise in its rankings over the past month. At the end of January, the chatbot was just outside the top 100, but has steadily climbed the charts throughout February. In the last few days alone, Claude has jumped from sixth place on Wednesday to fourth on Thursday, ultimately reaching the number two spot on Saturday.

The increased visibility of Claude can be attributed to Anthropic’s recent negotiations with the Department of Defense. Following the company’s efforts to establish safeguards against the misuse of its AI models for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, President Donald Trump issued a directive for federal agencies to cease using all Anthropic products. Additionally, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth labeled the company as a supply-chain threat.

In response to Anthropic’s stance, OpenAI announced its own agreement with the Pentagon, which reportedly includes provisions aimed at preventing domestic surveillance and the development of autonomous weapons. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in the deployment of AI technologies.

As Claude continues to gain traction in the app market, it remains to be seen how the ongoing developments in the AI industry will impact its future growth and user engagement.
