Selenis, a leading manufacturer of bio-based, medical-grade, and circular co-polyesters, is embarking on a significant expansion of its industrial headquarters in Portalegre, Portugal. The company’s ambitious goal is to double the site’s production capacity by the third quarter of 2027. This move comes in response to the impending EU packaging regulations, which will require all packaging on the market to be recyclable by 2030, with specific targets for recycled content and enhanced traceability.

The expansion project will focus on ramping up manufacturing capabilities for recycled polyester, offering both chemically recycled post-consumer resin and ISCC+ biomass balance solutions that meet European traceability standards. Selenis CEO, Duarte Gil, emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “This is a bold step forward for us. We are increasing our capacity to meet the growing demand while ensuring compliance with the evolving European regulatory landscape. Circularity is not just a concept for us; it is our industrial reality.”

A key aspect of the upgrade involves the installation of a continuous polymerisation (CP) line alongside the existing batch production setup. This addition is designed to streamline manufacturing processes, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce reliance on natural gas through greater electrification. Furthermore, the majority of the facility’s electricity needs will be met by an on-site solar park, reinforcing Selenis’ commitment to sustainability.

The additional capacity resulting from this expansion is expected to cater to the needs of industries such as food, healthcare, and textiles that are increasingly seeking alternatives with lower carbon footprints. Carlos Paiva, Selenis’ chief operating officer, highlighted the environmental benefits of the expansion, stating, “By adopting continuous polymerisation and transitioning towards electrification, we are significantly reducing the energy intensity of our production while lowering our carbon footprint. Coupled with our on-site solar farm, these initiatives ensure that our growth aligns with long-term global decarbonisation goals.”

In a previous collaboration in 2024, Selenis partnered with UPM Biochemicals and Bormioli Pharma to develop partially wood-based PET bottles for pharmaceutical applications, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainable practices. As Selenis gears up to double its output at the Portuguese facility by 2027, it remains at the forefront of the industry’s shift towards a more sustainable future.

This article, originally published by Packaging Gateway, provides valuable insights into Selenis’ expansion plans and its dedication to meeting the evolving demands of the market while staying true to its environmental objectives. As the company continues to innovate and invest in sustainable practices, it sets a benchmark for the industry as a whole.
