The Dunedin City Council by-election to fill the vacant seat left by the passing of former mayor Jules Radich will see 14 candidates vying for the position.

Among the candidates are Angus Mackay, Ange McErlane, and Gordon Dickson, who recently joined the race after the nomination deadline closed.

With the need for a 14th councillor at the table following Mr. Radich’s death earlier this year, the candidates are stepping up with their visions for the city.

Dr. Mackay, emphasizing his progressive and proactive approach, highlighted the potential of Dunedin’s waterfront and proposed projects like a bridge to transform the city.

Ms. McErlane, drawing on her experience at the council and the West Harbour Community Board, stressed the importance of infrastructure and its timely delivery.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dickson’s nomination raised questions as he resides outside the council area.

The diverse field also includes former city councillors like Conrad Stedman, Bill Acklin, Carmen Houlahan, Andrew Whiley, and Aaron Hawkins, a former mayor.

Additional candidates such as Jo Galer, Lync Aronson, Garreth Ottley, Richard Knights, Pamela Taylor, and Lianna MacFarlane are also in the running.

Voters can expect their ballots in the mail starting April 10, with polls closing on May 12.
