A tragic incident unfolded in Long Island as a man stabbed his estranged wife to death in a botched murder-suicide, with their teenage daughter bravely trying to protect her mother during the attack. Marcos Aurelio Marques-Leal, 57, was indicted on Monday for the brutal murder of Adriana Barbosa, prosecutors revealed. The couple’s 16-year-old daughter attempted to intervene as her father stabbed her mother in the head and neck after breaking into their Farmingdale home.
Marques-Leal, a Brazilian immigrant residing legally in the country, used a planter to smash his way into Barbosa’s home before launching the deadly attack. Despite the teenager’s efforts to stop him, he inflicted serious injuries on her hands. Following the gruesome act, Marques-Leal turned the knife on himself, sustaining wounds to his throat and stomach, but ultimately surviving the suicide attempt.
Suffolk County District Attorney Tierney described the incident as a horrifying act of domestic violence that resulted in the loss of an innocent life and deeply traumatized the couple’s daughter. Marques-Leal violated an order of protection by showing up at Barbosa’s residence on that fateful night, attempting to force his way in through multiple entrances before breaking the glass doors to reach his victims in the bedroom.
Despite the daughter’s courageous efforts to shield her mother, she also suffered minor injuries during the violent altercation. All three individuals were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Barbosa was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. Marques-Leal now faces charges of murder, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child, and aggravated criminal contempt. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
The motive behind the deadly confrontation between Marques-Leal and Barbosa remains unclear. The case is set to return to court on March 25, with justice being sought for the victims at the forefront of the legal proceedings. The harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence on families and communities.
