David Jaffe, the mastermind behind the popular “God of War” video game series, recently took to his YouTube channel to express his disappointment with the first look image from Amazon Prime’s upcoming “God of War” TV show. In the image, we see franchise hero Kratos standing in the woods with his son, and Jaffe didn’t hold back in criticizing it, calling it “so bad in so many ways.”
While Jaffe acknowledged the talent of showrunner Ron Moore and expressed confidence in the show itself, he couldn’t help but point out the flaws in the image. He specifically mentioned his issues with Kratos’ expression and pose, describing it as a “dumb image.” Jaffe didn’t necessarily have a problem with star Ryan Hurst not looking exactly like Kratos, but he felt that the overall presentation of the character in the image was lacking.
Jaffe questioned the decision to reveal a brand new character in such a manner, emphasizing the importance of making a strong first impression. He criticized the choice of expression for Kratos, suggesting that it made him look foolish rather than fierce. Jaffe speculated that perhaps the focus was on highlighting the father-son dynamic instead of Kratos’ iconic Spartan rage, but he argued that a better image could have been chosen to convey that message.
The first look photo, released by Amazon Prime on Feb. 27, also introduced other cast members, including Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Despite his criticism of the image, Jaffe remains hopeful that the show will ultimately be a success.
