San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police security team was attacked near the edge of the Tenderloin on Thursday evening. The incident left one officer bleeding from the back of his head after a chaotic street confrontation. Fortunately, the mayor was unharmed during the altercation, as reported by Mission Local.
The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. near Cedar Street when the security team was approached by three individuals who blocked their vehicle in the street. The officer assigned to Lurie’s security detail was left injured after slamming his head during a struggle with one of the suspects.
According to the injured officer, Lurie had been riding in a black SUV with the security team when the altercation took place. The group initially appeared to comply when asked to move, but one of the individuals started acting erratically. When the officer intervened, the situation quickly escalated, leading to a physical confrontation.
During the scuffle, the officer fell backward and hit his head on the pavement, resulting in a bleeding injury. Meanwhile, Lurie’s driver, who was also a police officer, was dealing with another individual at the scene but did not sustain any injuries. The role of a third person mentioned by the police remains unclear.
The suspected attacker was handcuffed at the scene and was heard shouting obscenities as he was being arrested. Another suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by the police a short distance away. A significant number of officers arrived at the scene to assist in the arrest and secure the area.
Following the incident, San Francisco Police Department released a statement confirming the arrests of two men in connection with the attack. The two officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation.
Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, commended the officers for their swift and courageous response in protecting the mayor during the dangerous situation. He wished the injured officer a speedy recovery and praised all involved for their bravery and decisive actions.
