FBI Director Kash Patel announced a groundbreaking cross-agency effort that led to the arrest of more than 300 individuals in the Chicago region over a span of 60 days.
“Operation New Dawn signifies a comprehensive, government-wide initiative under President Trump’s guidance to tackle violent crimes and crimes against children in major American cities,” Patel stated in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital.
Patel detailed that this extensive operation in Chicago involved collaboration among 11 federal agencies, resulting in 305 arrests and the recovery of 24 children, many of whom were previously reported as kidnapped or missing. The operation addressed offenses including robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and child exploitation.
Patel emphasized, “The success of this operation, along with future initiatives like Summer Heat 2.0, sends a definitive message that this FBI, in partnership with the Justice Department led by AG Todd Blanche, is fully committed to dismantling criminal networks across the nation.”
The operation included the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), as noted by a statement from the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois.
Beyond the robbers, kidnappers, and drug traffickers mentioned by Patel, the operation also targeted individuals involved in gun trafficking, gun offenses, and immigration violations, according to the US Attorney’s statement.
The operation was described as “badgeless,” highlighting that the federal agencies worked collectively “under the banner of the United States flag rather than any individual agency’s shield.”
US Attorney Andrew S. Boutros remarked that the operation and the cooperation it fostered heralded a new era of law enforcement in the United States.
“To combat violence effectively, federal law enforcement must match the speed of violence,” Boutros stated.
“The outstanding success of Operation New Dawn clearly demonstrates this. Chicago’s federal anti-violence teams came together under a single banner — the United States flag — to assert their presence on Chicago streets and establish themselves as a formidable force against violence.”
ATF Special Agent in Charge in Chicago, Christopher Amon, agreed with Boutros.
“Law enforcement is inherently a team effort,” Amon stated. “The success of Operation New Dawn reflects the leadership of the US Attorney’s Office and the trust, commitment, and collaboration among our Chicago federal law enforcement partners.
“Together, we achieved a significant impact by removing shooters and other violent offenders from our streets, enhancing safety in Chicago for everyone.”
This collaboration led to the apprehension of criminals like Felipe Dejesus Gomez Ramirez, identified by HSI as a convicted murderer and illegal immigrant.
Additionally, Operation New Dawn resulted in the arrests of David Collins and Tyrone Thomas, alleged members of Chicago’s Traveling Vice Lords gang, who were heavily involved in drug trafficking.
Both were federally charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl.
“Operation New Dawn showcases the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts in tackling the interconnected issues of violent crime and drug trafficking,” stated Todd C. Smith, special agent in charge of the DEA Chicago Field Division.
“Through the Homeland Security Task Force and in collaboration with the US Attorney’s Office, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies pooled intelligence, resources, and expertise to target individuals and criminal networks that jeopardize public safety.
“Reducing violent crime remains a top strategic priority for the DEA, and the significant drug seizures from this operation highlight the close link between violence and drug trafficking activity.
“By working together to dismantle criminal organizations, remove dangerous drugs from our communities, and hold offenders accountable, we are enhancing public safety while advancing our goal of a Fentanyl-Free America.”
The operation, which launched in earnest on May 1, has already resulted in 179 defendants being charged in federal court across 140 newly filed criminal cases.
According to the statement, 24 children, many of whom had been kidnapped, were located and returned safely to their homes.
