Ode Sentence Starters

Typically, an author addresses their subject directly in an ode, celebrating and glorifying it. These sentence starters guide students as they formulate potential lines for their poems. Additionally, this page includes a concise rubric checklist to ensure that students cover all essential elements in their compositions.

Ode Template

Once students have crafted their masterpieces, this template provides a designated space for them to showcase their work! There’s also room for students to include an illustration or image representing the subject of their ode.

How To Use Our Ode Printables in the Classroom

Utilize these activities to inspire and prepare students as they embark on composing their own odes.

Provide students with an ordinary, everyday object—such as a pencil, hat, or ball. Challenge them to articulate why this simple item is, in fact, extraordinary, brainstorming as many ideas as they can. If they can elevate the ordinary, imagine what they can do with something they genuinely love!

My Favorite Things

Encourage students to create an extensive list of things they cherish (e.g., colors, times of day, sports or hobbies, songs, movies, places, holidays, etc.). Ask them to quickly identify their favorites from each category. This exercise will provide a diverse array of topics for their odes.

Ode Collage

Before writing, supply students with a stack of old magazines and books. Instruct them to craft a collage of images and words that encapsulate the essence of their topic, including how it looks, sounds, and makes them feel. These collages can serve as a valuable source of inspiration during the writing process.

Count the Ways

“How do I love thee?” penned Elizabeth Barrett Browning. “Let me count the ways.” Challenge students to list as many reasons as they love their chosen topic within five minutes. See who can compile the longest list! They can then incorporate some of those reasons into their odes.

If It Could Talk …

Invite students to imagine that their subject can speak to them (yes, even inanimate objects!). What would it say? Provide sentence starters like “When people see me, they notice …” or “The most important thing to know about me is …” This shift in perspective can significantly enhance their creativity!
