The annual Lunar New Year mutual aid initiative at Abrons Arts Center is in full swing, showcasing art that not only highlights but also supports local businesses in Chinatown. The theme for this year’s exhibition, titled “From Chinatown, With Love,” revolves around the concept of “Storefronts as Sites of Cultural Resistance.”
One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is artist Singha Hon’s rendition of the traditional Chinese motif of eight horses galloping. In her painting, the horses symbolize strength and victory, but with a twist – they embody values of mutual aid and community support. Each horse represents different aspects of collective strength, such as resilience and interdependence, creating a beautiful and poignant portrayal of unity.
Another compelling installation in the exhibition is “Everyday Objects Introduction” by artist Michelle Moy. This piece features portraits of local business owners alongside everyday objects commonly found in Chinatown, like soy sauce bottles and bamboo steamers. The artwork serves as a tribute to the resilience and cultural significance of these businesses, highlighting their importance within the community.
Visitors to the exhibition are also treated to a mirror installation that proclaims “Best Seller. Hot Deal! $2,026.” This playful yet empowering piece invites viewers to reflect on the new year ahead and recontextualize their experiences from the past year. It serves as a reminder of the potential for growth and transformation in the coming year.
The exhibition also features community renditions of red envelopes from the Year of the Snake, stamps depicting zodiac animals from various cultures, and graphic art posters showcasing different Lunar New Year celebrations over the years. These artworks celebrate the diversity and richness of cultural traditions surrounding the Lunar New Year, emphasizing the individual and collective significance of these traditions.
“From Chinatown, With Love” will be on display at the Abrons Arts Center until March 22. The exhibition, organized by W.O.W.
