Otago’s hopes of breaking their lengthy Plunket Shield drought were dampened last week as their match against Canterbury ended in a draw. Rain played a major role in the last two days of the game, overshadowing any potential outcome.

Despite the unfavorable conditions, Otago managed to find some positives from the match. The top three batsmen all scored half-centuries in challenging seam-friendly conditions. Additionally, rookie left-arm bowler Thomas O’Connor and captain Luke Georgeson each took three wickets.

However, Northern Districts secured a six-wicket win against Auckland, solidifying their lead in the Plunket Shield standings with 65 points and three matches remaining. Auckland sits in second place with 55 points and is set to face Otago at Eden Park Outer Oval.

In preparation for the upcoming match, Otago’s coach Josh Tasman-Jones contemplated adding another spinner to the squad for the game against Auckland. The team’s leading scorer, Jacob Cumming, has been in good form this season with 390 runs at an average of 55.71.

Looking ahead, Otago must secure a positive result against Auckland to keep their title hopes alive. The team’s lineup for the match includes Jack Boyle, Jacob Cumming, Tom Jones, Thorn Parkes, Luke Georgeson, Max Chu, Troy Johnson, Ben Lockrose, Danru Ferns, Jarrod McKay, Lahiru Vimukthi, and Thomas O’Connor.

The match at Eden Park Outer Oval promises to be a crucial test for Otago as they strive to end their Plunket Shield drought dating back to 1987-88.
