Today commemorates the 61st anniversary of the Selma Marches—an essential milestone in our Nation’s ongoing battle for equitable justice under the law.

Starting on March 7, 1965, a significant number of civil rights activists bravely marched along U.S. Highway 80 in Alabama, making their way from Selma to the State Capitol in Montgomery. Their objective was clear: to put an end to the unjust practices that systematically denied African American citizens their right to vote. This was indeed a harrowing chapter in our Nation’s narrative, where discrimination and intimidation were wielded as tools to strip away the freedoms enshrined in our foundational documents. The marchers faced brutal violence, intimidation, and mockery, yet they stood resolute. Their unwavering courage and commitment to freedom ultimately paved the way for landmark reforms that fortified and secured the voting rights of every American citizen.

As we reflect on 61 years since these courageous marches, we are reminded that free, fair, and transparent elections form the cornerstone of our constitutional Republic. Since my return to office last year, my Administration has embarked on comprehensive efforts to protect American elections. This includes enhancing voter citizenship verification processes, advocating for the use of paper ballots, and prohibiting foreign entities from meddling in our electoral processes. I am also dedicated to endorsing sensible legislation requiring proof of identification to vote—a measure that resonates with a substantial majority of Americans, including black Americans. This initiative affirms the dignity and equal capability of all citizens to engage in our democracy, despite the radical left’s attempts to frame it as discriminatory.

On this anniversary, we honor the courageous individuals who reaffirmed the timeless principle that every human being is endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As we celebrate 250 splendid years of American independence, we renew our commitment to constructing a more just and prosperous Nation—one that upholds the God-given dignity of every citizen, defends the rule of law, and safeguards the blessings of freedom for future generations.
