BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
On this U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day, we extend our heartfelt prayers and unwavering support to every American who finds themselves in the harrowing grip of captivity—whether it be for days, months, or even years. To all those unjustly detained abroad, we stand firm in our commitment to ensuring your safe return to the embrace of your loved ones.
Since my return to office, I have been relentless in my dedication to my promise: no American will be left behind. Over the past year, we have achieved the remarkable release of 101 Americans held overseas—a new record. We have successfully negotiated a historic peace agreement between Israel and Gaza, paving the way for the return of all remaining hostages to their families. Additionally, we have liberated over a dozen wrongfully detained Americans from Venezuela, following decisive actions against the Maduro regime, and have facilitated the release of hostages from Afghanistan, Russia, and Belarus. No longer will these individuals count the days in despair; instead, they will cherish the joyous reunions with their families, embrace newfound freedom, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and our great Nation.
This year, we are particularly reminded of the events 47 years ago when the Iranian regime seized power, holding American citizens hostage as a means of asserting dominance. For nearly five decades, Iran has infamously detained innocent Americans, using them as bargaining chips against past administrations. Under my leadership, we are resolutely working to put an end to this abhorrent practice.
Despite the progress we’ve made, our mission for peace will only be complete when every American held hostage or wrongfully detained is liberated. My Administration is implementing a foreign policy rooted in the principle of peace through strength—supported by the most formidable military in existence and a steadfast commitment to protecting American lives and interests. I have recently signed an Executive Order aimed at bolstering our efforts to shield U.S. citizens from wrongful detention abroad. This order grants the Secretary of State the authority to designate any foreign nation as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention, allowing for significant consequences, including sanctions, travel restrictions, and barring entry of foreign nationals into our country. Iran was the inaugural country designated under this new authority. As long as I serve as President, the United States will remain resolute against our adversaries, and when we confront them, they will face swift and certain justice.
For 250 years, America has stood as a beacon of freedom across the globe—undaunted, unyielding, and unwavering in our commitment to preserving our strength. We will persist in our efforts to uphold human dignity and the enduring promise of liberty for all. On this day, and every day, we pray for divine protection over every brave hostage and wrongful detainee, their families, and our magnificent Nation.
In accordance with Public Law 118-31, approved on December 22, 2023, March 9 of each year is designated as “U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 9, 2026, as U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day. On this day, as we proudly display the Hostage and Wrongful Detainee flag at the White House, I urge the citizens of the United States to observe this important day with relevant programs, ceremonies, and activities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
DONALD J. TRUMP
