The progressive movement has hit a roadblock as reality has dealt them a harsh blow. The aftermath of the 2020 election revealed a significant shift away from the Democratic establishment towards more moderate positions. The Democratic party’s flirtation with far-left ideologies led to a series of policy decisions that ultimately backfired.
Cities like San Francisco, Portland, and Chicago experimented with progressive policies such as defunding the police and embracing open drug use, only to see crime rates soar and homeless encampments proliferate. The public backlash against these failed experiments forced Democrats to backtrack on their positions, with calls to fund the police and undoing previous criminal justice reforms gaining traction.
Even on immigration, once a divisive issue championed by President Trump, there has been a shift towards more stringent border control measures. The public, including Black and Hispanic Democrats, are now more likely to support increased police funding and stricter immigration policies.
On the cultural front, Democrats are facing pushback on issues like gender ideology and social justice commitments. Trump’s attack on Kamala Harris for her stance on transgender extremism struck a chord with voters, leading to a reevaluation of progressive priorities by corporate America and universities.
However, the progressive movement still holds sway among younger demographics, with 18-25 year olds overwhelmingly supporting progressive positions. The question remains whether these young true believers will eventually face the same reality check as their predecessors or continue to champion progressive ideologies.
While the progressive movement may have been temporarily derailed, it is far from dead. The key lies in whether it can adapt and learn from its mistakes. As the political landscape continues to evolve, only time will tell if the progressive movement can regain its footing and appeal to a broader audience.
