Tomorrow Studios, known for their successful adaptation of “One Piece,” is now taking on the challenge of bringing the cult anime “Samurai Champloo” to live-action television. The studio has enlisted the help of original series creator ShinichirĹŤ Watanabe, who will be creatively involved in the project. This collaboration marks a significant step for producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, who have established Tomorrow Studios as a prominent destination for anime-to-live-action adaptations.

During a dinner meeting in Japan, Watanabe expressed his willingness to be part of the creative process for the “Samurai Champloo” adaptation, which was met with enthusiasm from the studio. While the project is still in early development, Tomorrow Studios has already received significant interest from networks eager to bring the beloved anime to a contemporary television audience. The adaptation will stay true to the core elements that fans love, with a focus on integrating music into the storytelling, much like the original series did with its hip-hop-inflected score.

The studio’s previous adaptation of Watanabe’s “Cowboy Bebop” for Netflix in 2021 faced challenges and was ultimately canceled after one season. Adelstein and Clements acknowledged the importance of having the original creator involved in the creative process, a lesson they have embraced for their ongoing success with “One Piece.” Eiichiro Oda, the creator of “One Piece,” has played a crucial role in the production of the series, contributing to scripts, casting, and overall direction to ensure the adaptation stays true to his vision.

The second season of “One Piece” has been highly anticipated, with the story picking up where the first season left off as Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates venture into the Grand Line. The scale of the production is described as “unrelenting,” with a large crew working across various departments to bring Oda’s world to life on screen. The new season introduces a host of new cast members and locations, promising an exciting continuation of the adventure.

One of the most anticipated additions to the new season is Tony Tony Chopper, a fan-favorite character brought to life through a combination of prosthetics, visual effects, and performance capture. The meticulous care taken in creating Chopper reflects the studio’s commitment to honoring Oda’s vision and delivering a character that captures the essence of kawaii, a Japanese concept of cuteness and charm.

As production on season 3 of “One Piece” is underway, Tomorrow Studios is gearing up to bring “Samurai Champloo” to the small screen, promising fans a fresh and innovative adaptation of the beloved anime. With Watanabe’s creative input and the studio’s track record of successful adaptations, the live-action version of “Samurai Champloo” is poised to be a must-watch series for both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise. Clements, the partner and president of Tomorrow Studios, revealed during a recent interview that she was reviewing dailies that morning and was amazed by the surprises that the show continues to offer, even to its own producers. “Even you’re surprised every day with what you’re going to see,” she expressed. “It’s always a new idea.”

Aside from the success of “One Piece,” Tomorrow Studios is experiencing a period of growth and expansion. The studio ended 2024 with a straight-to-series order for “So Far Gone” on Netflix and announced upcoming projects such as “Reversal of Fortune” with writer Jack Thorne and “Funny You Should Ask” starring RegĂ©-Jean Page for Apple TV+. Additionally, a TV adaptation of Ace Atkins’ bestseller “Don’t Let the Devil Ride” is in the works, with Cheo Hodari Coker, the showrunner of “Luke Cage,” on board. Production for these projects is expected to begin in the latter half of 2026.

Tomorrow Studios has also achieved success with ABC’s “Shifting Gears” and previous projects like “The Better Sister” for Prime Video, “Snowpiercer” for TNT/AMC+, and “Physical” for Apple TV+. The studio, a collaboration between Adelstein and ITV Studios, is led by Adelstein as the founder and CEO, with Clements as partner and president.

Fans can now enjoy Season 2 of “One Piece” on Netflix, as the show continues to captivate audiences with its unique storytelling and surprises. Stay tuned for more exciting projects from Tomorrow Studios as they continue to push boundaries and deliver quality content to viewers worldwide.
