A Mexican citizen, Alonzo Cesena Camacho, is facing life in prison after attempting to smuggle nearly 1,000 pounds of liquid methamphetamine into the US. The 26-year-old from Tijuana, Mexico, was caught at the California border when Customs and Border Protection officers noticed a suspicious white substance on top of his truck’s fuel tank during a routine inspection at the Otay Mesa Import Cargo Facility.

Upon further investigation, officers discovered 29 buckets of liquid meth hidden inside the passenger-side fuel tank of Camacho’s commercial tractor-trailer. The total weight of the drugs amounted to almost 995 pounds, with a sample testing positive for methamphetamine. Camacho, who was trying to enter the US on a business visa, confessed that he planned to leave the truck in a parking lot in Otay Mesa in exchange for $1,000.

Following his arrest, Camacho was charged with importation of a controlled substance under federal law, a crime that carries a penalty of 10 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $10 million. Federal Judge Jill L. Burkhardt ordered him to be held without bail due to concerns about him being a flight risk. Camacho is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on March 17 and for his arraignment on March 26.

The Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection are leading an investigation into the case. Camacho’s attorney has not yet commented on the matter. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling across the US-Mexico border.
