California police bust South American burglary crew accused of targeting luxury homes

Six South American individuals, including several minors, were apprehended on Tuesday following a string of home burglaries that have plagued neighborhoods across California over the past year.

Andres Zarate, 32, Darlyn Alejandra Acosta Serrano, 32, along with four other suspects identified as 17-year-old minors, were charged with burglary and conspiracy, as stated by the Irvine Police Department. 

Authorities are still determining whether this group operated independently as a burglary ring or if they were connected to a larger network, according to the LA Times. 

“We are dedicated to the safety of our community,” stated Police Chief Michael Kent.

“This successful investigation sends a clear message to all that crime will not be tolerated here. We have the technology, resources, and expertise to find those who commit crimes in Irvine and ensure they are held accountable.”

The police utilized extensive surveillance and evidence gathering to identify the suspects, leading to arrests in various locations across the state, including Bellflower, Huntington Beach, and Los Angeles. 

The group is accountable for more than 10 residential burglaries in different neighborhoods throughout Irvine, police said. However, it remains unclear if they are involved in the “burglary tourism” trend, where foreign nationals come to the U.S. specifically to commit break-ins. 

In 2024, a Chilean national was reported to have targeted homes in the Pacific Palisades and Easy Hollywood, while several Colombians were arrested in Burbank last year, as per the Times. 

Detectives are continuing their investigation to ascertain if the suspects are linked to any additional criminal activities.
