The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals and other agencies, successfully conducted a large-scale human trafficking sting operation known as “Operation Safe Return.” During this operation, a total of 37 missing minors between the ages of 14 and 17 were rescued across California and neighboring states.

The rescued youths were provided with victim services, medical assistance, and resources to aid in their reunification with their families. California Attorney General Rob Bonta expressed his commitment to protecting the state’s children and ensuring their safe return home.

Law enforcement officers and federal agents worked tirelessly during the operation, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals. One suspect is facing federal charges for child sex trafficking and is currently under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security.

It was revealed that some of the rescued minors were victims of crimes such as child sex trafficking and sexual assault. The operation spanned from March 2-6 and involved collaborative efforts from agencies like the U.S. Marshals, California Highway Patrol, Anaheim Police Department, and LAPD.

Over 50 missing minors within the age range of 14-17 were identified during the operation, with some missing for up to two years. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office deployed officers and social workers to rescue these teens in various areas, including Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Orange County, and Los Angeles.

Despite the successful rescue mission, 13 cases from the operation remain open, with ongoing investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized its commitment to aggressively pursuing those who exploit children and ensuring their safety.

The operation highlighted the alarming statistics of missing children in Riverside County, with an average of 5,000-6,000 children running away or going missing each year. While most of these children return home shortly after leaving, the authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to protect vulnerable minors.

The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in Operation Safe Return underscore the importance of combatting human trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of children. The commitment to rescuing missing minors and holding perpetrators accountable remains a top priority for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and its partners.
