Google is making strides to enhance the performance of its mobile operating system, potentially benefiting all Android smartphone users. In a recent post on the official Android Developers blog, Software Engineer Yabin Cui shared insights into a new optimisation technique being implemented in the Android kernel, the core of the operating system.

The Android LLVM toolchain team is working on introducing Automatic Feedback-Directed Optimisation (AutoFDO) to Android’s code, which is expected to deliver significant performance improvements for users. AutoFDO leverages real-world usage patterns to optimize the core operation of Android. Google conducted tests using Pixel phones to simulate the launch of the 100 most popular apps, enabling the prioritization of frequently used code elements in future builds.

With the Android kernel accounting for approximately 40% of CPU time, any enhancements in this area are likely to have a meaningful impact. Google anticipates a 4% improvement in cold app launch times and a 1% reduction in boot times, promising a noticeable upgrade for users.

The tech giant plans to expand the implementation of AutoFDO beyond kernels to other aspects of the operating system, potentially benefiting all Android device manufacturers. This expansion could result in snappier interfaces, faster app switching, extended battery life, and overall improved device responsiveness for end users.

Initially, Google is introducing the AutoFDO technique to the android16-6.12 and android15-6.6 branches, which are part of the most recent Android releases. The company aims to extend this optimization to other areas of the OS, allowing smartphone manufacturers to enhance the performance of various hardware drivers. This means that future Android kernel improvements could lead to faster camera performance on devices like Samsung or Xiaomi phones.

In addition to these performance enhancements, Google has released the first Pixel Drop of the year, bringing a range of new features and upgrades to users. This continuous focus on improving the Android operating system demonstrates Google’s commitment to providing a seamless and efficient user experience for Android smartphone users.
