The tragic incident involving the boozed-up driver who allegedly killed Nassau County police officer Patricia Espinosa has shocked the community. The accused, Matthew Smith, 20, was reportedly leaving the James Joyce bar in Patchogue after a night of binge drinking when he callously ignored warnings from bar patrons that he was too drunk to drive. In a mocking gesture, Smith dangled his keys in front of people’s faces before defiantly getting behind the wheel and speeding off, ultimately causing the fatal crash.

During his court appearance in Suffolk County, Smith pleaded not guilty to a dozen new upgraded charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, and aggravated vehicular assault. This came after he had previously pleaded not guilty to just one count of driving while intoxicated. The severity of the new charges could potentially result in Smith facing anywhere from eight years to life in prison if convicted on the top count.

According to prosecutors, Smith had a blood alcohol content of .20%, more than twice the legal limit, at the time of the crash. He was recklessly driving at speeds exceeding 70 mph in a 30 mph zone, disregarding traffic signals, and ultimately colliding with Officer Espinosa’s vehicle. The impact was so severe that her car flipped upside down, trapping her inside for over 30 minutes until first responders were able to free her.

Smith’s passenger, John Andali, who had only recently met him at a late-night taco spot, described Smith as acting “crazy” leading up to the crash. Andali even posted videos on social media just 30 minutes before the incident, showing Smith driving at dangerously high speeds, blowing through stop signs, and swerving recklessly on their way to a casino.

The tragic loss of Officer Espinosa has left a deep impact on the community, with prosecutors condemning Smith for turning the roads of Suffolk County into his own personal raceway. The gravity of the charges against Smith serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. The pursuit of justice for Officer Espinosa and her loved ones remains a top priority as the legal proceedings against Smith continue.
