The highly anticipated reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” has hit a major roadblock as Hulu has decided not to move forward with the project, as confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar herself. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Gellar expressed her sadness at the news, thanking director Chloé Zhao for the opportunity to step back into Buffy’s iconic shoes.
Originally announced in February 2025, the sequel series titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” was set to follow a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Gellar making appearances as Buffy in a recurring role. The pilot also featured a talented cast including Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott.
Despite the setback, sources close to the show have indicated that there is still a lot of love for the “Buffy” franchise, leaving the door open for future iterations. The show’s creators, Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman, along with executive producers Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton, had all been working tirelessly on the project. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon was not involved in the reboot.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” first rose to fame as a 1992 film before transitioning into a successful television series starring Gellar.
