Cordy Ryman: Transforming Minimalism into Something Unique

Cordy Ryman, the son of legendary painters Robert Ryman and Merrill Wagner, has carved out a name for himself in the art world by developing his own visual language. Drawing inspiration from his parents’ work and the Minimalist movement, Ryman has created a body of work that is distinctly his own.

During a visit to Ryman’s Brooklyn studio, it became evident that his practice revolves around working with 4-by-8-foot sheets or 2-by-4-inch wood boards. He employs a variety of acrylic paints, from matte to glossy, and is open to experimenting with different colors. What sets Ryman apart is his willingness to repurpose his artwork, using pieces from past exhibitions to create new works. Nothing is final until it finds a new home, showcasing his commitment to staying open to the possibilities of his materials.

Ryman’s father, Robert Ryman, imparted valuable advice to his son: always follow your own path and avoid simply following trends or market demands. This philosophy is evident in Cordy Ryman’s work, which exudes playfulness, inventiveness, and exuberance. He embraces the natural beauty of wood, allowing its grain to influence his paint application and color choices.

One striking aspect of Ryman’s work is his use of circles and lines to create abstract compositions. Each piece is a unique exploration of form and color, with no two works being exactly alike. In preparation for an upcoming exhibition in Seoul, South Korea, Ryman is experimenting with different-sized blocks of wood, each painted in a distinct style.

Ryman’s work challenges traditional notions of painting and sculpture, blurring the lines between the two mediums. His art is both formally rigorous and openly playful, rejecting the trend of costly fabrication often associated with Minimalism. Instead, Ryman finds joy in the process of creation, infusing his work with a sense of lightness and spontaneity.

In a world where art can sometimes feel overly serious and self-important, Cordy Ryman’s work serves as a refreshing reminder to loosen up and have fun. By embracing the possibilities of his materials and allowing his creativity to guide him, Ryman has carved out a unique place for himself in the contemporary art scene.
