Hal Fischer, the nonprofit’s co-founder and photographer, revealed to Hyperallergic that neither he nor anyone he knew received any prior notice about the impending developments.

San Francisco’s photography institution, SF Camerawork, has decided to cease operations after 52 years, as announced on Instagram this week. The organization will close on August 16, coinciding with the conclusion of John Chiara’s solo exhibition, Bay Panel, at its gallery located in the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture.

In their statement, the organization acknowledged the relentless efforts of its staff, board, artists, donors, and supporters to ensure a sustainable future. However, due to challenges like increasing operational costs, reduced public funding, and shifts in the philanthropic environment, they concluded that continuing operations is no longer feasible.
