Oatmeal: A Bedtime Snack Scientifically Proven for Better Sleep

It’s interesting how certain habits integrate into our daily lives, often before we recognize their benefits. One such habit for me has been consuming oatmeal before bedtime. Initially, it was not a deliberate health choice or a wellness trend; it simply served as a satisfying evening snack when I felt hungry. However, I soon noticed an improvement in my sleep quality, as I was experiencing deeper sleep, waking up less frequently, and feeling more refreshed in the mornings.

Was it just a coincidence? Possibly. However, oats are known to contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid that contributes to the production of serotonin and melatonin—the hormone responsible for managing the sleep-wake cycle. While food alone is not a remedy for insomnia, scientific evidence does suggest that certain foods, when part of a healthy lifestyle, can aid in achieving better sleep.

Since obtaining sufficient sleep is crucial for maintaining good health, exploring strategies to enhance sleep quality is worthwhile. Adequate rest is linked to numerous health benefits, including improved metabolic health, enhanced cognitive abilities, and a reduced risk of chronic illnesses.

Is oatmeal healthy?

Oatmeal, a traditional breakfast staple in Northern Europe, is made by simmering rolled oats in water, milk, or a plant-based drink until they become soft and creamy.

Rich in complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, oatmeal is not only filling but also versatile and easy to adapt. I’ve enjoyed oatmeal for years, mainly because of its taste and the variety of toppings it accommodates. In the mornings, I prefer a robust version with fresh fruit, honey, and milk, or occasionally, dark chocolate. For my evening routine, I opt for a simpler version, combining oatmeal with Greek yogurt and nut butter to emphasize protein and healthy fats over added sugars.

Oatmeal before bed

The nutrient-rich composition of oatmeal, with its complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, makes it an excellent choice for a healthy nighttime snack. Nutritionist Martina Donegani suggests that oatmeal can be a beneficial option for those who feel hungry before bed, eat dinner early, or engage in evening exercise and require a recovery snack.

According to Donegani, oats provide complex carbohydrates and fiber, particularly beta-glucans, which promote a feeling of fullness and a steady release of energy. When combined with a protein source such as yogurt or milk, oatmeal becomes a balanced and complete mini-meal. In certain cases, it can serve as a suitable evening snack.

My own experience supports this notion. Consuming a small bowl of oatmeal before bed helps me relax and often leaves me feeling less hungry and more energetic the next day.

As with most nutritional advice, individual context is important. Donegani emphasizes that while there are no absolute contraindications for eating oatmeal at night, it should be tailored to the individual’s needs. For those on a low-calorie diet, adding an evening snack might affect their calorie deficit. Individuals with diabetes or insulin resistance should monitor portion sizes and pair oatmeal with protein and healthy fats, avoiding added sugars. People with gastroesophageal reflux may also need to avoid snacks too close to bedtime.

A light evening snack

To manage the potential caloric intake, Donegani advises keeping the oatmeal snack light. Start with plain rolled oats prepared with milk or plain yogurt, and avoid adding sugar when possible. Fresh fruit can naturally sweeten the dish. Donegani also recommends enhancing the nutritional value with cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa powder, nuts, or seeds.
