The World Health Organization has recently approved the release of $2 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) to provide crucial health assistance in Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria during the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

The conflict has resulted in a significant displacement of populations, with WHO estimating that over 100,000 individuals in Iran have been displaced and up to 700,000 people in Lebanon have been internally displaced.

Lebanon will receive $1 million to enhance the WHO’s emergency coordination efforts through the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, expand trauma care services, strengthen disease surveillance, and procure and distribute essential medications and medical supplies, as stated by the organization.

Meanwhile, Iraq and Syria will each receive $500,000 to support emergency coordination and management of mass casualties, procure and distribute vital medicines and supplies, deliver healthcare services to displaced populations, and enhance disease surveillance and community engagement efforts.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasized the importance of providing support during this critical time when healthcare services are already under strain, emphasizing the need to sustain frontline healthcare workers and vital care services.
