Kieran Culkin made a lighthearted joke about Sean Penn’s absence at the 2026 Oscars after Penn won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for his performance in “One Battle After Another.” Culkin, 43, humorously remarked, “Sean couldn’t be here this evening — or didn’t want to be — so I’ll be accepting the award on his behalf.”
The Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars also featured nominees such as Benicio del Toro for “One Battle After Another,” Jacob Elordi for “Frankenstein,” Delroy Lindo for “Sinners,” and Stellan SkarsgĂĄrd for “Sentimental Value.” Before the awards ceremony, del Toro, 59, and Penn, 65, were the only nominees in this category who were already Oscar winners.
Del Toro had previously won the award for Best Supporting Actor in 2001 for his role in “Traffic” and received another nomination in 2004 for “21 Grams.” On the other hand, Penn is a two-time Oscar winner for Best Actor, winning for “Mystic River” in 2004 and “Milk” in 2009. Elordi, Lindo, and SkarsgĂĄrd were all first-time Oscar nominees this year.
Throughout the awards season, Penn received recognition for his role in “One Battle After Another” by winning both an Actor Award and a BAFTA Award, although he was absent from both ceremonies. At the Actor Awards, Penn triumphed over del Toro, Elordi, Miles Caton from “Sinners,” and Paul Mescal from “Hamnet.” Similarly, at the BAFTA Awards, Penn emerged victorious against del Toro, Elordi, Mescal, SkarsgĂĄrd, and Peter Mullan from “I Swear.”
SkarsgĂĄrd had his own moment of glory at the Golden Globes, winning the supporting actor award. In his acceptance speech, he humorously mentioned how his eight children were “very educational” in preparing him for his role in “Sentimental Value.”
