The blaze occurred at the Z Energy service station on Russley Rd in Yaldhurst, and emergency services were alerted shortly after 4 p.m.
Police confirmed that one individual was injured in the incident. When asked about the severity of the injuries, a police spokesperson stated, “I don’t believe so at this stage,” in response to whether the person had died.
Fire crews from the Ilam and Wigram stations were dispatched to manage the situation.
Hato Hone St John directed all further inquiries to the police.
The area was cordoned off by police as emergency services tackled the fire.
Witnesses shared their accounts of the event on social media.
“A man caught fire and was struggling when a good Samaritan driving by noticed and rushed over to help. Even though there were other people at the petrol station, no one else stepped in,” one witness reported.
Another individual shared that their friend had witnessed the incident.
“He tried to help but had to stop because the fire was too intense. He was yelling for a fire blanket, but no one came to help. What shocked them even more was that no one tried to get involved or use a fire extinguisher.”
