Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing a cool reception from some Australians as they prepare for their visit. The couple, who last toured the country in 2018 as newlyweds on their first official royal tour, have sparked mixed reactions. During their previous visit, Markle reportedly expressed her dissatisfaction with not being compensated, saying, “I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this,” a remark noted by Valentine Low in his 2022 book Courtiers.
This time, numerous Australians are keen to ensure that their tax money does not fund the couple’s private visit. A petition has been initiated, demanding that “Australian taxpayers must not be expected to fund security, logistics or government coordination” for what is considered a “private celebrity visit.” The petition has gathered over 8,000 signatures.
While in Australia, both Harry and Markle are participating in private events where they are compensated. Markle, originally from California, is offering her keenest fans VIP tickets costing nearly $2,300 each for the “Her Best Life” women’s retreat in Sydney. This package includes a group photograph with Markle and a short speech. She is reportedly receiving $1 million for the engagement, which includes “first class travel and security,” and accommodations at “the best hotels.”
Additionally, Harry is scheduled to address workplace mental health issues in Melbourne, with top-tier tickets priced at over $1,600.
