Police apprehended a DUI suspect who had climbed onto the roof of a middle school following an intense standoff early Monday morning.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. when police attempted to stop a driver whose vehicle was moving erratically in Sun Valley. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department reported that the driver ignored police instructions and attempted to flee, initiating a high-speed chase. The pursuit concluded when the suspect’s car collided with a fence near Byrd Middle School.
After crashing, the suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, exited the vehicle and ran onto the school’s property with police in close pursuit.
The individual, estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, then climbed onto the roof of the school and refused to come down, according to the police.
Authorities secured the area as the suspect, who removed his shirt, paced on the roof. A safety landing pad was deployed below the building in case he attempted to jump.
Negotiators eventually persuaded the man to descend from the roof, police confirmed.
Footage captured by KTLA shows the man descending a pole adjacent to the roof. Once on the ground, he appeared to reconsider climbing back up, but officers quickly intercepted and arrested him.
Representatives from Los Angeles Unified assured that the campus was secure and would proceed with classes on Monday.
“As a precaution, the Los Angeles School Police Department will provide additional patrols around our school,” read a message to the Byrd Middle School community.
The suspect remained in police custody on Monday morning and faces charges including evading arrest.
