The man accused of being the infamous Long Island Serial Killer is reportedly facing unspecified health issues, Us Weekly confirms.
Rex Heuermann did not attend a scheduled hearing on Tuesday, March 17, concerning his ongoing criminal case on Long Island.
The proceedings continued as planned, and following the hearing, Heuermann’s attorney, Michael Brown, informed reporters that his client has been using crutches for over a month.
According to Brown, the 59-year-old Heuermann is experiencing some health challenges.
“Since today was only a submission date and we had a comprehensive discussion via phone yesterday, we agreed it was best to waive his appearance,” Brown stated.
When asked for more details about Heuermann’s health, Brown declined to provide specifics. “I’m not at liberty to discuss,” he said when questioned if Heuermann had fallen in jail. “He has some health issues, so for now, it seems best for him to remain in jail.”
The next scheduled court appearance for Heuermann is on April 8.
Heuermann, who is married with two adult children, was arrested in July 2023 near his Manhattan office in connection with three of the Gilgo Beach murders.
Heuermann faces charges for the murders of Valerie Mack, 24; Jessica Taylor, 20; Megan Waterman, 22; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Sandra Costilla, 28; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27.
He has pleaded not guilty to all seven murder charges. Investigators continue to link Heuermann to two additional bodies found at Gilgo Beach.
Authorities spent weeks collecting evidence from Heuermann’s home, which included a significant cache of firearms.
Earlier in the year, Peacock released a documentary titled The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets, executive produced by rapper 50 Cent.
The series featured Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, and their children. Ellerup filed for divorce shortly after Heuermann’s arrest.
In the documentary, Ellerup expressed doubt that her husband could be the notorious Long Island Serial Killer.
“Nobody deserves what they got. But Rex was not seeing [sex workers]. He’s a family man. He didn’t do this,” Ellerup claimed. “I would need to hear it from Rex face to face that he killed these girls for me to believe it. My husband never kept me out of anything.”
Heuermann is currently detained at the Riverhead Correctional Facility on Long Island, with his trial set to commence in September following Labor Day.
