Jamie Carragher praised Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior following their 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
Vinicius shone for Real Madrid, netting two goals at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, securing a 5-1 aggregate win. The Brazilian opened the scoring with a penalty in the 22nd minute after Bernardo Silva received a red card for handling the ball on the line. Erling Haaland equalized before halftime, but Vinicius scored again in stoppage time to clinch the victory.
Thanks for the submission!
After the match, Carragher lauded the Brazilian’s performance, emphasizing his consistent impact in the Champions League.
“Vini Jr. always delivers in the Champions League. Year after year. And again, this year he’s at the heart of it,” Carragher said.
Vinicius also played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s UCL play-offs against Benfica, scoring the only goal in the first leg in Portugal and the winner in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. He has scored five goals in this season’s Champions League so far.
“It was a very tough game” – Vinicius on Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Manchester City
Despite the win, Vinicius acknowledged the difficulty of overcoming Manchester City at the Etihad. He commended City for controlling much of the match and expressed regret over his missed opportunities.
Even though he compensated with his goals, Vinicius missed two significant chances and hit the post once. He shared with reporters after the match:
“A very important match for our confidence because since the beginning of the season we have had many good games, but we haven’t controlled as much as we did in this tie. It was a very tough game, against a great team and a great coach. They had possession for a long time, but we knew what we had to do: work and take advantage of opportunities. Of course, I missed many, but today I didn’t need as much.”
Real Madrid is likely to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. The Bundesliga team holds a 6-1 lead and will play Atalanta in the second leg of their round of 16 matchup today. Alvaro Arbeloa’s team will next face Atletico Madrid in a local league clash.
