Trump reendorses Jeff Hurd in Colorado House primary

President Donald Trump has reinstated his endorsement of Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) for his reelection bid, according to a social media announcement made on Friday. This development comes only weeks after Trump had withdrawn his initial support due to Hurd’s opposition to Trump’s tariff policies.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “I will be fully supporting Jeff’s Re-Election to the House of Representatives, giving him my Complete and Total Endorsement! Every true MAGA supporter and Republican, if they truly care about saving our Country, will do everything in their power to unify together, and defeat the Crazed Radical Left Democrats this November.”

For several weeks, Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders have been in discussions with the White House, urging both Trump and officials like deputy chief of staff James Blair to reconsider their stance and support Hurd. The competitive nature of Hurd’s district, which he won by just 5 points in 2024, has been a key point in these conversations, according to four individuals with direct knowledge of the talks who requested anonymity.

Within the last 24 hours, Trump personally informed Hurd of his decision to renew the endorsement, as confirmed by two of these sources and another individual familiar with the call.

Back in late February, Trump had revoked his support for Hurd and endorsed Hope Scheppelman instead, criticizing Hurd as a “RINO” for not supporting his tariff policies. This move followed a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated Trump’s tariffs, with two of Trump’s own appointees, Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, opposing him in the decision.

Earlier that month, Hurd had joined a group of five House Republicans and the Democratic Caucus in supporting a resolution to oppose Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

Scheppelman, who was Hurd’s rival in the Republican primary, is now stepping away from the campaign to accept a position in the administration, as mentioned by Trump.

On Friday, Hurd expressed his gratitude on X, saying, “I’m grateful for President Trump’s support and appreciate his efforts to unify Republicans in Colorado’s Third District. The President and I share the same goals: securing the border, American energy dominance, and helping working families.”
