Severe delays at TSA airport lines forced Trump and Republicans to accept the Democrats’ proposal that had been on the table for six weeks. Despite this, there is still no funding for ICE and border patrol, as House and Senate Democrats continue to push for reforms in these areas.
Senate Democrats attempted to pass funding for the TSA on at least ten occasions, but were met with Republican resistance, who insisted on linking it to funding for ICE and border patrol. Following the tragic murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota, Democrats stood firm in their refusal.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) commented after the Senate approved the Democratic proposal:
Following the tragic events involving Renée Good and Alex Pretti, Senate Democrats made it clear: there will be no unrestricted funding for an unregulated ICE and Border Patrol.
This much-needed agreement provides funding for TSA, the Coast Guard, FEMA, and CISA; enhances security at borders and entry points; and ensures American safety. This resolution could have been reached earlier if not obstructed by Republicans.
Democrats have consistently opposed additional funding for what they see as Donald Trump’s uncontrolled and dangerous force without significant reform, and they will persist in advocating for these changes.
While some mainstream media outlets have suggested that there were no winners in the TSA dispute, this view is seen as overly sympathetic towards the party in control of the House, Senate, and White House, which mishandled the situation.
