A Virginia woman has been arrested for impersonating a registered nurse and working in multiple hospitals across California, overseeing the care of around 60 patients. Amanda Leeann Porter, 44, was caught posing as a nurse at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Los Angeles County, where she worked for a month before being discovered.
Porter managed to collect two paychecks during her fraudulent employment at the hospital between April 8 and May 8. Once her true identity was revealed, she was fired by the hospital and reported to the authorities. The LA County District Attorney charged Porter with identity theft, false impersonation, and grand theft.
Following her arrest by the Burbank Police Department, Porter was arraigned and is currently being held without bail at the LA County Central Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. It was uncovered during the investigation that Porter had previously posed as a nurse at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita.
Detectives found that Porter had used various false identities to secure employment at multiple local hospitals in California. They suspect that other hospitals may have unknowingly hired her under false pretenses. The Burbank Police Department urged anyone with information on similar instances in Southern California to come forward.
Both Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital stated that Porter was in a probationary phase of her employment and was supervised by a qualified training nurse. However, it became clear that her level of care did not meet the standards expected of a registered nurse. Patients she cared for were informed of the incident by hospital officials.
Porter is also on federal probation for a fraud violation in Virginia. Court documents reveal that a woman named Amanda Porter-Eley, who matches Porter’s description, pleaded guilty to impersonating a nurse and committing bank fraud in Virginia in 2017. She had used the identity of a nurse from New York to gain employment at a hospital in Virginia.
Porter-Eley continued using the stolen identity until her arrest, causing significant financial losses to banks and retailers. She fraudulently obtained cash, loans, goods, and services under the nurse’s identity, including opening bank accounts using other people’s Social Security numbers. The investigation into Porter’s actions is ongoing, and her true motives are still being uncovered.
