During his Monday night broadcast, Colbert remarked, “According to an Italian religious historian, neither Hitler nor Mussolini ever attacked the Pope so openly and directly.” He humorously added, “It’s never a good sign when someone advises, ‘You should really be more discreet and respectful. Trump’s outburst against Pope Leo was fueled by the Pontiff’s stance against the conflict with Iran, as well as criticism of Trump’s immigration policies.
On Truth Social, Trump vented his frustrations: “Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime and terrible for Foreign Policy. I don’t want a Pope who believes it’s acceptable for Iran to possess a Nuclear Weapon.
“I don’t want a Pope who disapproves of America’s actions against Venezuela, a country that was flooding the United States with drugs while releasing prisoners, including murderers and drug dealers, into our country.
“And I refuse to accept criticism from a Pope targeting the President of the United States, as I am precisely executing the mandate for which I was decisively elected, achieving record low crime rates and creating the greatest stock market in history.”
