Barbie Ferreira has opened up about her decision to leave HBO’s “Euphoria” after its second season. She explained that she felt her character, Kat Hernandez, lacked a meaningful creative path and wanted to pursue more challenging acting roles.

During a recent appearance on Amanda Hirsch’s “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast, Ferreira clarified that her departure was not due to behind-the-scenes drama or the rumored dramatic walk-off that circulated online. Instead, she described a gradual, collaborative realization that her character’s development had stalled.

“It wasn’t dramatic,” Ferreira stated, emphasizing that despite ongoing discussions about Kat’s storyline, they struggled to find a fulfilling direction. “It just wasn’t going anywhere.”

Ferreira had announced her decision not to return to the series in August 2022 via Instagram, expressing a “very teary-eyed goodbye” after four years with the character. She referred to Kat as “the most special and enigmatic character” and thanked fans for their support, sharing that she had put all her care and love into the role.

At that point, Kat’s storyline had already been significantly reduced in Season 2. Introduced in Season 1 as a central character, Kat’s journey initially focused on themes of body confidence and sexuality, but she was increasingly sidelined as the season progressed.

Ferreira also noted that the diminished scope of her role influenced her decision when considering the time commitment required for the series. She explained that filming a season of “Euphoria” typically spans about nine months, making it hard to justify spending nearly a year on a project where she wasn’t consistently acting or creatively challenged.

“I don’t need to be on the biggest TV show on earth if I’m not, like, acting,” she remarked. “I would rather do an indie movie where I’m flexing my muscles, being creatively asked to do things.”

Ferreira addressed the fan speculation following her exit, including alleged tensions with series creator Sam Levinson, which HBO had previously denied. She consistently refuted claims of walking off set or feuding, saying she felt caught up in a narrative that extended beyond the truth.

“I kind of got sucked into this drama that I never asked to be in,” she said on the podcast, reiterating that her departure was a “mutual decision” driven by the lack of direction for Kat’s storyline. In previous interviews, she echoed that Season 2 was a creative and emotional challenge for both her and the production team.

“I believe in myself as an actress, and I want to see my career look a little differently than this. It’s okay if it’s not, like, the hit TV show,” she expressed. “I did that. I want to do my thing.”

Despite leaving, Ferreira remains proud of her time on the series and intends to watch the newly released third season, which continues without Kat as the narrative evolves.
