The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reportedly considering the addition of a “black box” warning label on COVID vaccines, according to a report by CNN. The potential implementation of a black box warning comes on the heels of a leaked memo allegedly written by the FDA’s chief medical and scientific officer, Dr. Vinay Prasad, which linked the deaths of 10 children to the vaccines without substantial evidence.

In response to these claims, a Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson dismissed them as pure speculation, emphasizing the FDA’s commitment to thoroughly investigating any reports of adverse events associated with regulated medical products.

Black box warnings are designed to alert consumers to significant health risks associated with a medical intervention, including vaccines. While over 400 medications in the U.S. carry such warnings, vaccines with black box labels are exceedingly rare due to the rigorous safety and efficacy assessments they undergo before approval.
