During his 2024 election campaign speech at the New York Economic Club, Trump declared, “We’re going down and getting gasoline below $2 a gallon.” He also pledged to reduce costs on various fronts, including electricity, groceries, airfares, and housing.

Jump to April 2026, and prices have surged across the board. Contrary to his promises, Trump’s policies have led to increased costs, influenced by factors like tax cuts for the wealthy, tariffs, and the conflict with Iran, resulting in a significant rise in overall prices.

As gas prices, alongside groceries, heavily impact American consumers, Trump’s decision to initiate a war that raised gas prices by 40% has sparked widespread public anger.

Scott Bessent, serving as Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary, has a net worth of $600 million. His substantial wealth, shared by the president and his cabinet, highlights a disconnect from the everyday challenges faced by ordinary citizens.

In an inquiry by Fox News’s Peter Doocy, Bessent was questioned, “Secretary Bessent, it seems unlikely that we’ll see $3 a gallon gas by summer, as initially suggested by the energy secretary. He now describes achieving $3 a gallon gas as very aggressive. So, when can we realistically expect $3 a gallon gas?”

It’s important to note that Trump initially promised gas prices below $2 a gallon, yet the target has now shifted to $3 a gallon.
