Fifteen years after the debut of the popular “Divergent” series, author Veronica Roth is revisiting the dystopian realm that brought her fame. During BookCon in New York City on Saturday, Roth unveiled a new companion duology set in an “alternate universe” where the series’ heroine, Tris Prior, makes a drastically different decision at her Choosing Ceremony. This announcement sparked excitement within the young adult fiction community, as many fans have speculated about the unexplored paths of characters who have influenced a generation of dystopian narratives. This marks Roth’s most notable return to the Divergent universe since the original trilogy ended in 2013.
The upcoming book, “The Sixth Faction,” is slated for release on October 6. It can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, providing fans with a fresh perspective on familiar characters and their dilemmas. “Not a prequel, not a sequel, not a spinoff, not a different POV but an alternate universe of Divergent where Tris chooses a different faction,” Roth explained to USA Today. The central question of the narrative, according to Roth, is “who is Tris without Dauntless,” examining how identity is shaped when foundational decisions deviate from the original story. Whereas the original trilogy had Tris choosing Dauntless, the bravery faction, this new storyline propels her into an underground rebellion after a tragic event at her Choosing Ceremony, where she once again meets Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton, but under very different circumstances.

Roth shared her enthusiasm about how existing fans will experience the blend of familiar and new elements in the story. “For existing fans, I’m excited for them to see how the old and the new fold together,” she said. “You’d think that certain things wouldn’t happen because she makes a different faction choice, but she does find her way to the same people. Seeing how that happens is a really fun part of it.” This suggests that the duology will delve into themes of destiny versus choice, exploring whether some relationships and conflicts are destined to happen regardless of initial decisions.
The enigmatic Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton, Tris’ love interest from the original books, appears in The Sixth Faction under circumstances that contrast sharply with their initial meeting in the canon. The development of their relationship without the Dauntless initiation context is expected to be one of the most intriguing aspects of the duology for fans who have long been invested in their dynamic.
The Original Divergent Legacy
In the original trilogy, consisting of Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012), and Allegiant (2013), Tris Prior navigates a post-apocalyptic Chicago where society is divided into five factions based on predominant personality traits. As a Divergent, she doesn’t fit into a single category and must hide her status as factional tensions escalate into war. The series became a cultural phenomenon and led to a film series starring Shailene Woodley as Tris in “Divergent” (2014), “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” (2015), and “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” (2016).
Despite the franchise’s commercial success, a planned fourth film, Ascendant, was never made. Roth had previously expanded the universe with the 2014 short story collection Four and the 2018 short story “We Can Be Mended,” both providing deeper insights into Four’s character, who became almost as beloved as Tris.
What This Means for Divergent Fans

This alternate universe concept allows Roth to revisit her successful creation without repeating known storylines or contradicting the established narrative. Fans who felt the original trilogy’s ending left some questions unresolved now have the opportunity to explore “what if” scenarios that honor both the source material and their emotional connection to these characters.
The duology format promises a complete narrative across two books rather than an ongoing series, ensuring readers that this new adventure is both structured and purposeful. As the release of The Sixth Faction on October 6 approaches, the Divergent community eagerly anticipates discovering whether Tris’ identity is truly tied to her faction choice, or if certain character traits transcend their circumstances.
