Venus Williams entered the 2026 Madrid Open with a wildcard but faced an early exit as she lost 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets to Kaitlin Quevedo in the first round.

The decision to award Williams a wildcard sparked discussion among fans. Some questioned if she was occupying a spot that could have been pivotal for a younger player. Responding to such claims, Rennae Stubbs defended Williams.

Stubbs emphasized that Williams has earned the privilege to play wherever she is invited, asserting that younger players still have numerous opportunities through smaller tournaments. She argued that a single missed chance does not determine a player’s career.

“100% disagree. She’s earned the right to play whenever she wants, wherever she is asked & given that opportunity. Younger players can play smaller events and earn their way on the tour IF they are good enough. If you think 1 chance is making or breaking a player, you don’t get the tour,” Stubbs wrote.

When another fan questioned the rationale behind granting Williams wildcards despite her early exits, Stubbs clarified:

“That’s not up to me to decide, it’s up to the tournament director, sponsors, and Venus. You think she likes it? At some point she will retire and never play again, until then, it’s up to her and those that give it to her.”

Williams mentioned that her clay training was limited, having started her preparation a few weeks post the Miami Open.

“Yeah, I mean, to get my feet dirty, this was a great start. I’m not able to play Rome, I have other commitments, unfortunately, so I’m really super sad about that, actually. My husband is Italian, so we feel sad that we can’t be there. So we would love to keep it going on the clay,” she said.

Although Williams will skip the Rome tournament due to prior engagements, she is focused on competing at the French Open, hoping to receive another wildcard.
