Raven Johnson was chosen by the Indiana Fever as the 10th pick in this year’s WNBA draft. On Wednesday, she discussed her professional journey thus far with Dawn Staley, her former coach at South Carolina, and Tessa Johnson, her former teammate from the Gamecocks.
The specifics of their discussion are unclear, but Staley shared a tweet featuring an image of her video call with Tessa and Raven.
“Training camp chronicles with @HollywoodRaven! Giving @tessajohnsonnnn some valuable lesson about life in @WNBA! Each one teach one @GamecockWBB style!” Staley tweeted.
Raven started at South Carolina in 2021 but missed her first season due to a knee injury.
She departed the Gamecocks as a two-time national champion and was honored as the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in her final season.

Indiana Fever HC Stephanie White heaps praise on Raven Johnson
On Tuesday, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White praised Raven Johnson’s defensive capabilities.
“Well, I mean, certainly what we knew is that she’s a bear on the defensive end of the floor,” White said of Johnson. “You know, she’s got great active hands. You know, she doesn’t seem to get in mismatched situations because of her activity level on the defensive end.
“Her arms are like forever long. And she’s, you know, just working her way into figuring out the playbook. She’s a high-level communicator, so she does a really good job of communicating, especially with us on the sideline asking questions.”
Indiana will open its preseason against the New York Liberty on Saturday.
