When Marieum Ahmad decided to introduce a turtle to her classroom during her first year of teaching, it was more than just adding a cute class pet. Her aim was to foster a sense of community, instill responsibility, and establish a classroom culture where students felt connected through a shared experience.

Marieum, a 4th grade teacher in California, has integrated her turtle, Todo, into the daily life of her classroom, using him for science lessons and student jobs. We spoke with her about her choice of a turtle, how her students gained the responsibility of caring for him, and the lessons learned from having a class pet. She also shares her experiences as a first-year teacher on Instagram at Mrs. Marieumm.

Q: What inspired you to bring a class pet into your classroom, especially in your very first year of teaching?

In my first year, I wanted to create a classroom that was both welcoming and unique for my students. With them transitioning to a new grade and facing new expectations, I sought a way to build community. A class pet provided a shared responsibility that could instill pride while teaching responsibility and empathy.

Q: Why did you choose a turtle specifically?

Todo has been with me for five years, and I always believed he would be an ideal class pet. Turtles are suitable for classrooms as they are non-disruptive and intriguing for children, sparking curiosity and questions—perfect for a learning environment.

Q: You do a lot of content around being a first-year teacher. Why is that important for you?

When studying to be a teacher, I encountered a lot of negativity online, which can impact aspiring educators. I wanted to highlight the positives of teaching, even as a newcomer. It’s crucial to be transparent about the first year, which can be a mix of excitement, challenges, joy, and fatigue. Sharing my journey helps other new teachers feel connected and emphasizes the depth of teaching beyond classroom activities.

Q: How did you introduce the turtle to your students, and what was their reaction?

On the first day, students learned about Todo and were told they needed to earn him. Through demonstrating responsibility and effort, Todo became part of our class two months later. This approach gave students a sense of personal value. They were instantly excited and curious, asking many questions about turtles, which united the class.

Q: In what creative ways do you incorporate the turtle into your lessons or classroom routines?

We use Todo for observation, writing exercises, science lessons on animals and habitats, and as part of daily routines. Students write about their observations, measure food, or use him as a topic for discussion. He is also integrated into our classroom job system.

Q: What roles or responsibilities do students have in caring for the turtle?

Students are involved in feeding from a distance, checking water and tank temperatures, and ensuring Todo’s area is clean and safe. These tasks rotate so everyone participates, fostering accountability and teamwork. I’ve seen students be protective and gentle, reminding each other of the rules and ensuring Todo’s safety, which has been heartwarming.

Q: How has having a classroom pet supported your students socially, emotionally, or academically?

The turtle has encouraged students to practice kindness and patience, offering a positive topic for conversation and bonding. Academically, it has boosted engagement, especially in writing and science, as students are eager to learn when lessons are tied to their classroom environment.

Q: What tips would you give another teacher who is considering a class pet?

Research the animal to ensure it suits your classroom and schedule. Establish clear care rules and make it a shared duty. Be realistic about the time and commitment needed. I discovered turtles are observant and curious, with distinct personalities, which my students have noticed.

Q: What do you hope students take away from the experience of caring for an animal in the classroom?

I hope they gain a sense of responsibility, empathy, and respect for living creatures. I want them to see our classroom as a community where we care for each other and our shared spaces. Above all, I hope they fondly remember Todo as part of their educational journey.

Q: Anything else you’d like readers to know about your first year, your students, or your classroom pet?

This first year has been filled with challenges, learning, and beautiful moments, highlighting the teacher’s role beyond academics. Teaching is about creating relationships, safe spaces, and ensuring students feel seen and valued. The turtle symbolizes patience, care, and consistency in our classroom.

I aim to showcase the joy and positivity in teaching, even during tough times. I hope to convey that classrooms can be vibrant, supportive environments where students are eager to learn. As a first-year teacher, I strive to inspire creativity, kindness, and purpose, leaving students with lasting memories of how they felt in our classroom.
